Implementation of the first official workshop of the project: The Iraqi National Dialogue 2021 - 2022

On May 29 & 30, 2021, the first workshop of the project, "The Iraqi National Dialogue 2021 - 2022", started in Baghdad. This workshop is the first of its kind, out of a total of 24 within the next 2 years.

At the Rotana Babylon Hotel, located on the banks of the Tigris River, a total of 25 participants gathered to address diverse topics dealing with the Iraqi National Dialogue. The participants included politicians, academics, actors & athletes, activists, theologians of various faiths and members of civil organizations who share the common goal of strengthening Iraqi unity and stability in the region.

The first session, which was held on 29.05.21, dealt with the topic of "The Nation, the Citizen and the Iraqi Identity at a round table. How to create a homeland for all Iraqis?"

Within this session, the different parties discussed from their respective points of view how reflecting on a common nationality can lead to unity within the Iraqi population and how to implement this.

On the same day, a second roundtable was held under the title: "We are all citizens with equal rights and duties. Reviving the Concept of Citizenship Based on Genuine Equality in Iraq."

Here, issues surrounding the Iraqi state in particular were discussed. A common national identity can only emerge if Iraqi politics accepts the various ethnic groups on an equal footing and grants them their rights and, in particular, vital resources.

In addition, two other workshops were held on 30.05.21. The first was also held at a round table and was entitled: "Iraq's diverse identity and its role in building a state of institutions. How can Iraqi diversity be conducive to building and strengthening a state of institutions?"

The Iraqi population has a variety of ethnic and religious groups. This diversity can help build the Iraqi state and strengthen its constitutional institutions, as well as serve the interests of the nation and society. However, the basis for this is a comprehensive dialogue within the nation.

The second roundtable on that day addressed the topic, "Voter Participation, Citizenship, and the Concept of the Homeland. Why should Iraqis participate in large numbers in the upcoming elections? And what is the connection between voter turnout, the future of the country, and building a modern state?"

At the conclusion of the first sessions, the plenary discussed the importance of elections and political participation of the population. The main points were the encouragement to vote and an increase in confidence in political influence by the population. Measures and effects in this regard were discussed and worked through.

Overall, these workshops laid the foundation for further dialogue within Iraq. The participants engaged in a lively exchange with each other, and discussions were held at eye level and with mutual respect. The respective opinions and suggestions were recorded and will be analyzed and evaluated in due course.

The following workshops of the project will take place on 06 & 07 July 2021, also in Baghdad. We will publish the topics there also in the follow-up on our website for the readership.
